Nicholas Smith, Principal French Horn


After five years as the Associate Dean of the College of fine Arts at Wichita State University, Nicholas Smith returns to an active teaching and performing career which includes returning to his position as Principal Horn for the American Sinfonietta.

Besides an active teaching role, his position at Wichita State includes memberships in the Wichita Brass Quintet, the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet and the Principal Horn Chair of the Wichita Symphony. Other positions he has held include the Principal Horn position with the Oklahoma City and Madison, WI Symphony Orchestras, Assistant Principal Horn with the Rochester, NY Philharmonic, and as a member of the Kansas City Symphony.

Dr. Smith has worked with summer festivals such as the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz Austria, the Bay View, Music Festival, and the Brevard Music Center. Additional academic appointments include teaching at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has been a frequent presenter/soloist at conferences of the International Horn Society and his students can be found playing in many orchestras and military service bands throughout the country, Europe, and the Far East.

A native of Kansas, he earned degrees at Pittsburg State University (BM) and the Eastman School of Music (MM, DMA, and Performers Certificate.) His principal teachers include Philip Farkas, Verne Reynolds, and Roland Berger.
